What does the day look like?
The day is usually 09:00 to 17:30 or 09:00 to 18:00, Monday to Friday: 37.5-40 hours. You update 2D plans and elevations, enter redline corrections, tag BIM elements, export schedule quantities, and prepare planning application booklets or Design and Access Statements using Revit, Archicad, Vectorworks, Rhino 3D/Grasshopper, SketchUp, AutoCAD, InDesign, and Photoshop.
Only about 15% of the day is the glamorous part: concept design, hand sketching, and attractive presentation renders. The other 85% is technical drafting, repetitive BIM modelling, fixing layers, planning submissions, cardboard/timber model-making, SLA/FDM 3D printing, Epilog laser cutting, ordering material samples, and filing project correspondence. There are no night shifts or formal on-call duties, but late evenings and unpaid overtime are notorious before competition deadlines or local authority planning submissions.
