What does the day look like?
Most of the day is inside Revit, Archicad, AutoCAD, Rhinoceros 3D, Grasshopper, SketchUp, Enscape, V-Ray, and Adobe Photoshop/InDesign/Illustrator. Under an Associate or Project Architect, you produce 2D drawings, general arrangement plans, sections, detail sheets, BIM models, door/window schedules, and planning application packs.
The glamorous part students imagine is only 15% to 20% of the day: concept design, massing, rendering, or physical models using balsa wood, foam board, 3D printers, and laser cutters. The other 80% to 85% is production drafting, layer cleanup, CAD annotation fixes, InDesign booklet formatting, and filing. Normal contracted hours are 37.5 to 40 hours, usually 09:00 to 17:30 or 18:00, Monday through Friday. There is no standard night shift or on-call work, but evening and weekend overtime is common before competitions, planning submissions, and tender deadlines.
