What does the day look like?
At headquarters in Geneva, Vienna or New York you work 09:00 to 18:00, Monday through Friday, 40 hours per week. 35% of the day is drafting analytical briefings, SitReps, project proposals, donor reports and NFRs in Microsoft Word and SharePoint to United Nations Editorial Manual standards. 25% is budget tracking, procurement requisitions, grant compliance and travel authorizations in Umoja, the SAP ERP ECC/S4HANA system. 20% is inter-agency coordination meetings under the OCHA Cluster system with UNDP, UNHCR, UNICEF, local NGOs and host ministries, plus correspondence and diplomatic cables. 15% is field monitoring visits, site verification, stakeholder interviews and entry into ActivityInfo, UNHCR proGres v4 or KoBoToolbox. 5% is speechwriting and background notes for visiting delegations at P-5, D-1, Under-Secretary-General or Special Representatives of the Secretary-General level.
High-level diplomacy and plenary speeches are 0% to 5% of the work. 95% is Umoja approvals, logframes, chasing donor metrics and clearances. At field duty stations in category D or E such as South Sudan, Afghanistan or Chad the week is 50 to 60 hours with rotating 24/7 on-call for security and evacuations, plus Rest and Recuperation every 4, 6 or 8 weeks by hardship classification.
