What does the day look like?
A Clinical Specialist Occupational Therapist works 37.5 hours per week on a standard public hospital contract (Monday to Friday, 08:30 to 16:30 or 08:00 to 16:00). In acute units such as stroke services, clinicians rotate on 7-day rosters, covering 1 in 4 to 1 in 6 weekends. Night shifts do not occur, and emergency on-call is rare and confined to regional trauma centers.
Direct patient care occupies 40% to 50% of the day: administering standardized diagnostic assessments including MoCA, AMPS, FIM, Barthel Index, Nine-Hole Peg Test, and Jamar dynamometers; molding custom thermoplastic splints using Aquaplast and Orfit in water baths heated to 65 to 70 degrees Celsius; and conducting motor retraining. Mandatory clinical documentation, discharge summaries, and equipment orders in systems like Epic Systems, Cerner Millennium, or SystmOne consume 30% to 35% of the schedule. The remaining 15% to 20% is dedicated to multidisciplinary case conferences, supervising junior staff and university students, and conducting clinical audits.
