What does the day look like?
A standard contract covers 37.5 hours per week, typically from 08:00 to 16:30 or 08:30 to 17:00, Monday to Friday. Night shifts are virtually 0%, though seven-day services require working 1 in 4 to 1 in 6 weekends with compensatory weekday rest days. Between 40% and 50% of the day is direct patient rehabilitation: retraining personal activities of daily living like dressing and transfers, upper-limb motor therapy (CIMT, mirror therapy, FES and NMES), moulding custom thermoplastic splints using water heating pans and heat guns, assessing kitchen safety, and conducting cognitive tests like MoCA, MMSE, and BIT.
The less visible 30% to 40% of the shift is administrative work: updating electronic health records in Epic Systems, Cerner Millennium, SystmOne, or EMIS Health, logging therapy minutes on the SSNAP audit portal, reporting incidents in Datix, and attending multidisciplinary team meetings. The remaining 10% to 20% involves visiting patients' homes to measure doorways and steps, ordering equipment, and coordinating care with families.
