What does the day look like?
Your core responsibility is guiding a direct delivery pod of 4 to 8 software engineers while maintaining technical standards. Around 30% of your time goes to mentoring developers, running 1-on-1 meetings, and resolving team friction, while 25% is spent on technical architecture reviews, setting coding standards, and conducting code reviews. Another 25% involves sprint planning, backlog grooming, and coordinating with product managers. Direct coding accounts for only 15% to 20% of your time (often dropping below 10%), with the remaining 5% to 10% dedicated to interviewing candidates and administrative tasks.
Daily work relies on tools like Jira Software, Linear, GitHub, GitLab, Docker, Kubernetes, AWS Console, Slack, Notion, Datadog, and Sentry. Hours are generally standard at 40 hours per week, but team leads serve as the primary escalation point for severe production outages (Tier 3 on-call), requiring occasional evening or weekend troubleshooting during critical releases.
Will AI replace this job?
ILO/NASK 2025 exposure index: 0.53, Gradient 3 for ISCO-08 2512 Software Developers; 0.44, Gradient 2 for ISCO-08 1330 Information and Communications Technology Service Managers. This is task exposure on a 0-1 task-automation scale, not job elimination. The dossier places 2512 at about the 90th percentile and 1330 at about the 82nd percentile, with 100% of listed tasks in exposed bands for both groups. BLS 2026 also classifies the matching SOC 15-1252 and SOC 11-3021 roles as “Very high” on its Low, Moderate, High, Very high relative AI exposure scale, but says this is not a forecast of job loss, automation probability, adoption, productivity, or wages.
The exposed part of the day is the technical and codified work: writing code, generating tests, preparing documentation, supporting code reviews, triaging bugs, summarising monitoring data, drafting backlog items and user stories, comparing architecture options, and evaluating technology upgrades. The less-exposed part is accountable leadership: mentoring, 1-on-1s, resolving technical disagreements, choosing trade-offs under product and business constraints, hiring judgment, performance feedback, and production escalation where responsibility, trust, and context matter.
What do you need to start?
Software engineering team leadership is an unregulated profession with no statutory licensing requirements. A Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related STEM field is typical, but hiring decisions are primarily gated on 4 to 7 years of progressive engineering experience and demonstrated system design and leadership abilities.
No single certification substitutes for hands-on engineering mastery, but industry credentials validating architecture and agile delivery include AWS Certified Solutions Architect (Associate / Professional), Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA), Professional Scrum Master (PSM I / PSM II), and Certified ScrumMaster (CSM).
Where do you study, and for how long?
There is no direct undergraduate degree titled "Team Leader" — leadership roles are achieved through software engineering foundations followed by career promotion. In Uzbekistan, Inha University in Tashkent offers a 4-year B.Sc. in Computer and Software Engineering at UZS 40,400,000 per year for domestic students (2025–2026). Tashkent University of Information Technologies (TUIT) offers 4-year software engineering programs at state contract rates (starting around UZS 7,400,000 to UZS 10,000,000 annually). Amity University in Tashkent charges approximately USD 3,300 per academic year for its 4-year B.Tech in Computer Science and Engineering, while Turin Polytechnic University in Tashkent (TTPU) offers a 4-year Software Engineering program at approximately UZS 28,500,000 per year.
Abroad, Technical University of Munich (TUM) in Germany offers a 3-year B.Sc. in Informatics / Information Systems taught in German and English, costing EUR 4,000 to EUR 6,000 per semester for non-EU students. Poland's Warsaw University of Technology offers an English-taught 3.5-year B.Sc. in Computer Science at approximately EUR 4,500 per year. In the UK, the University of Manchester provides a 3-year B.Sc. in Computer Science with international tuition at GBP 34,500 per year (2024/2025). In the US, San Jose State University offers a 4-year B.S. in Software Engineering at approximately USD 19,500 per year for international students.
For work visas, degree recognition is required: Germany evaluates degrees via ZAB (EUR 208, taking 2 to 3 months), the UK uses UK ENIC (GBP 50 to GBP 100, taking 15 to 20 working days), and the US utilizes NACES agencies such as WES or ECE.
Where can you actually work?
The role exists widely in Uzbekistan across major fintech and banking institutions such as Payme, Click, Uzum, Kapitalbank, and TBC Bank Uzbekistan, telecoms like Ucell and Beeline, and IT Park export hubs, paying gross monthly salaries of USD 2,500 to USD 4,500. IT Park provides preferential tax rates between 1% and 7.5% for qualifying specialists.
Remote work for US and European employers from Uzbekistan is a realistic pathway paying USD 4,000 to USD 7,000 per month via contractor (YaTT) or Employer of Record (Deel, Remote.com) models, requiring direct working-hour overlap with CET or US timezones. Relocating abroad is viable through skilled immigration schemes like the German EU Blue Card or UK Skilled Worker visas.
Where are the jobs posted?

Country-specific job boards that require a local right to work or visa sponsorship include StepStone Germany (stepstone.de) and Honeypot.io (honeypot.io) in Germany; No Fluff Jobs (nofluffjobs.com) and Just Join IT (justjoin.it) in Poland; ITJobsWatch (itjobswatch.co.uk) and Reed.co.uk (reed.co.uk) in the UK; and HeadHunter Uzbekistan (hh.uz) and IT Park Job Portal (it-market.uz) in Uzbekistan.
How much English, honestly?
University admission gates require an IELTS of 6.0 to 6.5 or TOEFL iBT 80 to 88 in Germany and Poland, IELTS Academic 6.5 to 7.0 in the UK, and TOEFL iBT 80 to 90 or IELTS 6.5 to 7.0 in the US.
On the job, however, you need at least CEFR C1 proficiency. Unlike junior developers who only read documentation, a team lead spends 60% or more of the day negotiating product requirements, drafting architectural proposals (RFCs), resolving team disputes, and delivering sprint reviews. In domestic non-English enterprises, local language fluency (such as Goethe C1 in Germany or JLPT N1/N2 in Japan) is also required.
