What does the day look like?
A Director of Rooms sits on the Executive Committee (ExCom), reports directly to the General Manager, and oversees the Front Desk, Concierge, Guest Relations, Housekeeping, Laundry, Valet, and Bell Service. Daily operations rely on PMS tools like Opera Cloud / Oracle Hospitality Opera, protel, or Amadeus Hospitality, alongside FCS Housekeeping, Quore, Optii, HotSOS, IDeaS G3, Revinate, Medallia, TrustYou, and LQA audit platforms.
Only 15% of the time involves high-profile guest interaction: welcoming VIP guests, greeting visiting dignitaries, escorting diplomatic delegations, and resolving escalations with high-net-worth patrons. The rest is heavy operational management: 40% goes to managing rotas across 50 to 200 staff, chairing briefings, and inspecting suites against 300+ brand standards; 30% is spent analyzing ADR, RevPAR, forecasting occupancy, and negotiating supplier contracts; 15% covers safety drills and audits. The role requires 50 to 60 hours per week. Serving as Manager on Duty (MOD) on rotating weekends and holidays brings 14-hour shifts and 24-hour on-call availability.
