What does the day look like?
You own a collection from start to finish: you set the seasonal concept and mood board, draw sketches, flat drawings and technical specifications, direct fabric, colour and trim research, attend fittings and correct prototypes, run the seasonal calendar and sample budgets, and mentor junior designers. The Marc Jacobs Design Director posting describes the same chain from concept to sketch to proto to sample to production, with material research briefs, sketch and proto reviews, and work with merchandising and product development on cost engineering and margins.
Sketching is about 1/5 of the work, the rest is fittings, tech packs, supplier and atelier liaison, calendar, budget and people management. Tools named in the postings: Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, Microsoft Office, tech-pack systems and 3D rendering review. The work is studio-based, full-time, with heavy overtime around fashion weeks, fittings and sample deadlines, with no night shift or on-call rota, but with routine travel to factories, ateliers in France and Italy, and fashion capitals.
