What does the day look like?
An architect spends only 15% to 20% of their time on creative sketching, concept design, and 3D massing. Between 45% and 55% of the day goes into drafting technical documentation, detailing, and coordinating BIM models in Autodesk Revit, Graphisoft Archicad, or Autodesk AutoCAD to resolve clashes with structural and engineering models. Another 20% to 25% is spent checking building codes, preparing planning applications, and meeting clients. The remaining 10% to 15% involves visiting construction sites with a hard hat and laser distance meter to inspect installations and handle defect lists.
Standard hours run from 40 to 50 hours per week. While there is no shift or on-call work, crunch periods before major milestone deadlines or competition submissions often push hours to 55 to 65 hours per week, with unpaid overtime being common in private design studios.
