What does the day look like?
You decide complex planning applications: you check them against planning law, write 40-page committee reports, draft Section 106 / CIL obligations, and run consultations with highways, environmental health, flood risk and heritage officers. Your tools are Esri ArcGIS, QGIS, Idox Uniform, Northgate Planning, Civica, DEF Software, an AutoCAD viewer, Adobe InDesign and Microsoft 365. You visit sites, mentor assistant and graduate planners, and face residents at contested cases.
Hours are 37 per week in the UK public sector and 38 to 40 per week in Australia and the US. There are no night shifts, but 1 or 2 evenings a month you must attend a council committee from 18:00 to 21:00. The glamorous part — designing futuristic cities — is 10% of the day. The other 90% is compliance checks, reports, legal emails and negotiation.
