What does the day look like?
Placement days run 09:00 to 17:00, 37 hours per week in places like Local Authority Children's Services or NHS Mental Health Trusts. You shadow or co-work with a practice educator or practice supervisor. Mornings are multi-agency case conferences or joint home visits: safeguarding assessments, Section 47 enquiries under the Children Act 1989, or Care Act 2014 assessments. You work in Liquidlogic LCS and LAS, Mosaic or SystmOne, plus multi-agency child protection platforms and risk assessment matrices.
Direct client contact is 25% to 35% of the week, not 80%. Case documentation, legal writing, court reports and multi-agency referrals take 55% to 65%. The remaining 10% is statutory supervision and a reflective learning portfolio. As a student you do no night or weekend rotas; qualified workers in the emergency duty team cover overnight and weekend on-call.
