What does the day look like?
You write match previews, match reports, player interview copy and press releases; you cut quotes from press conferences; you run club and show social accounts during matches; you shoot and edit short video; you publish to a CMS; you turn post-match statistics into graphics; you staff the mixed zone; you escort camera crews; you compile media monitoring and coverage reports; you draft holding statements for injuries, transfers, disciplinary cases and fixture changes. Tools: WordPress and comparable CMS products, Adobe Premiere Pro, Adobe Photoshop, Dalet or Avid iNews in broadcast newsrooms, LiveU and bonded-cellular kits for live hits, Canon and Sony mirrorless video bodies, OBS Studio and vMix, X, Instagram, TikTok and YouTube Studio publishing tools, Sprout Social or Hootsuite scheduling, Google Analytics and Meta Business Suite for reporting, Datawrapper, Flourish or club template packs.
Live football from the gantry is only 10% to 20% of paid hours. About 80% to 90% is desk and phone work: transcription, sub-editing, versioning 1 story across web, app, newsletter and 4 social formats, rights clearance, embargo handling and re-writes after a late goal or a denied quote. Matchdays are shifts of 10 to 14 hours including evenings, weekends and public holidays. Travel is to grounds and training bases, mostly domestic, with 20 to 40 away days per season for a club media officer.
