What does the day look like?
Most of the day is spent investigating escalated tickets, analysing logs and telemetry, reproducing faults in a lab, and finding the root cause. You may use Zendesk, Jira, Confluence, Linux, Docker, Kubernetes, Python, Bash, REST APIs, TCP/IP, DNS and Datadog. During a serious incident, you lead calls with the customer and internal engineers, then write the root cause analysis, post-event review, runbook or debugging guide.
The dramatic part—speaking to an angry customer and fixing the problem live—is a minority of the day. Most time goes into reading logs, reproducing the bug, testing ideas, documenting the case and persuading product engineering to accept the bug report. AWS roles specify a 5-day working week, occasional weekend rotations and on-call responsibility.
