What does the day look like?
Your morning usually starts from a brief: you sketch a visual direction in Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, or Figma, then present layouts to the client in PowerPoint or live. Roughly 25–35% of the day is concepting, presenting, and client communication. About 30–40% goes to reviewing and directing other people's work — you coordinate designers, photographers, and retouchers, and approve InDesign layouts plus digital, social, and OOH versions. Another 15–25% is meetings, email, and production logistics; only 10–20% is hands-on layout or sketching. Adobe After Effects, Jira, and Confluence also appear in the role; some hybrid digital art director posts add HTML/CSS or WordPress.
This is not shift work or night duty — it is a studio or office day job. O*NET reports that 62% work more than 40 hours a week, 89% sit continuously, and 100% have daily face-to-face team contact. Extra hours are common before campaign launches. This is advertising and brand visual direction, not film/TV production design.
