What does the day look like?
You do not spend the day sketching runway looks. About 30% of it is building and updating tech packs inside Centric PLM, Lectra Kubix Link, YuniquePLM or Microsoft Excel: fabric composition, GSM weight, Pantone TCX/TPX codes, trim codes, wash instructions and graded measurement charts. Another 25% is technical flat drawing in Adobe Illustrator, 15% is 3D sampling in CLO3D or Browzwear V-Stitcher, 15% is requesting swatches from mills, cutting and tagging them and building mood boards, and 10% is fit sessions with a live model, pinning, measuring and logging alterations. Creative sketching in Procreate or Photoshop is only about 5% of the day.
Normal studio hours are 9:00 to 18:00 or 9:30 to 18:30, 35 to 40 hours per week. For 3 to 6 weeks before a Fashion Week show in Paris, Milan, London or New York, or a sales deadline, the week rises to 60 to 75 hours, with nights past 22:00 and weekends spent on emergency finishing, spec corrections and fittings.
