What does the day look like?
As a senior buyer your day is numbers. You review the Open-to-Buy budget with merchandisers, set SKU width and depth by store cluster and online channel, and negotiate Wholesale Cost, Recommended Retail Price, payment terms, margin minimums, return-to-vendor agreements and markdown support with vendors. Every week you track sell-through rate, weeks of supply, gross margin return on inventory investment and P&L, and you follow purchase orders, lead times, customs documents and distribution centres with logistics.
You work in SAP S/4HANA Retail & Fashion module, Oracle Retail Merchandising System, JOOR, NuORDER by Lightspeed, Lectra Kubix Link, advanced Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Power BI and Tableau. At Pitti Uomo, TRANOI and Paris Fashion Week showrooms you review prototypes and handle fabrics. About 15% to 20% of the day is trends and showrooms, 80% to 85% is Excel, margin maths, contracts and P&L meetings. The norm is 40 hours per week, rising to 55 to 60 hours per week in January-March for Autumn/Winter and June-September for Spring/Summer. No night shifts and no on-call. Travel is 20% to 35% of the working year to Milan, Paris, London, New York or factory hubs.
