What does the day look like?
The work day typically starts early at 07:00 or 07:30, with contracts running 45 to 55 hours per week. About 30% of your time is spent on commercial and contract administration, which includes reviewing sub-contractor payment applications, negotiating change orders, and tracking budget burn rates. Another 30% goes to scheduling and coordination, updating critical paths, and leading weekly coordination meetings with clients and subcontractors.
Around 20% of the day involves walking the site to verify milestone progress and audit safety (HSE) protocols, while the remaining 20% is dedicated to drafting monthly progress reports and managing municipal permits and utility interfaces. Daily tools include Oracle Primavera P6, Microsoft Project, Procore, Autodesk Construction Cloud (BIM 360), Bluebeam Revu, and Microsoft Excel. Night shifts, weekend work during major concrete pours or crane lifts, and on-call duties for site emergencies are routine parts of the job.
