What does the day look like?
Work standardly runs 40 to 50 hours per week, with site shifts typically starting at 06:30 or 07:00. Night shifts and continuous 24-hour attendance occur during major raft foundation concrete pours, bridge segment installations, or highway tie-ins. The visible, hands-on site leadership takes up only about 20% of your time. Around 50% is spent in the office answering Requests for Information (RFIs), logging Non-Conformance Reports (NCRs), calculating material take-offs, and resolving drawing clashes. The remaining 30% involves physical site inspections of rebar spacing, formwork, and safety perimeters in the dust, heat, or cold.
Daily tools include design and BIM software such as Autodesk AutoCAD, Autodesk Revit, Autodesk Civil 3D, and Bentley MicroStation, alongside structural analysis packages like CSI SAP2000, CSI ETABS, and Bentley STAAD.Pro. Project tracking relies on Oracle Primavera P6, Microsoft Project, and Procore, while site surveying uses Leica Geosystems or Trimble total stations, optical levels, and Schmidt rebound hammers.
